Building permits can be printed from this website or one can be acquired from the Village Clerk or Utilities Superintendent. Permits must be filled out completely and inspected by the Utilities Superintendent before being presented to the Village Board at the next town meeting for apporval.
When Do I Need A Building Permit?
- Whenever any structure, addition, lean-to, awning or fence is constructed or moved on a property.
- Including any lot improvements, with a limit of an additional or removal of more than 5 yards of dirt. (May be subject to architect or engineer sign-off at the Village discretion)
- No improvement to a floodplain without NRD approval and an engineer sign-off at the discretion of the town board.
- Shipping containers:
- The Village of Valparaiso currently has an ordinance banning any shipping containers on residential properties. They are allowed on commercial properties but must be fastened on a footing or a slab.
- Failure to acquire a building permit will result in a $500 fine and the structure can be removed by the Village at the expense of the owner of the property in accordance with Chapter 9 Section 9-105 and 9-401.

Pet Committee
Dog and Cat Licensing
- Proof of rabies vaccination is required at the time of licensing.
- A photo of your dog or cat is necessary for licensing. Photos can be sent to Valparaisopets@gmail.com or a member of the committee can take the photo. Photos will be used to help identify lost or stray pets so they can be returned home quickly.
- The Committee does have a microchip scanner that will be used to get the number of the chip to attach to your pet’s file as well.
- A metallic tag will be issued for each dog or cat licensed. Tags shall be properly attached to the collar or harness. The tag will have the pets name and owner’s phone number listed.
Annual Pet Licensing Fee: Fixed $5.00 Not Fixed $10.00

Burn Pile & Compost Pile
Located ¼ mile North of the Village on the East side of Hwy 79.
Open to Valparaiso residents only.
Dirt is for Public Works use only.
Area is monitored by surveillance
Compost materials go in the pile located on the North end of the property. Brush goes in the center of the property, and logs go in the pile located on the South end of the property.

- No bagged waste
Individuals disposing of materials not accepted may be fined or cited.
Area is governed by NeDWEE and the EPA. Failure to follow posted rules regarding accepted items could result in elimination of this service for the Village.
